The Afsluitdijk has been protecting the Netherlands against the sea for over 80 years. To guarantee our safety in the future, Rijkswaterstaat will reinforce the Afsluitdijk and build the pumps in the locks to be able to drain more excess water from the IJsselmeer. This makes the Afsluitdijk the largest pumping station in Europe. Regional governments working together under the name “De Nieuwe Afsluitdijk” have formulated ambitions in the field of economic development, ecology and sustainable energy that can be implemented simultaneously with the renovation of the Afsluitdijk. The New Afsluitdijk and the government work closely together to ensure a safe, sustainable, attractive and future-proof dyke. The implementation of the project is planned from 2017.
